Anne Hathaway — who was nearly canceled in the early aughts for the heinous crime of having a personality that annoyed some people — is facing fierce backlash once again.

Conservatives are outraged over an eight-year-old clip of the Oscar-winner receiving the 2018 National Ally for Equality Award from the LGBTQ organization the Human Rights Campaign, in which Hathaway gave a speech about, well, equality.

“It is important to acknowledge with the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth,” Hathaway said during the speech.

“That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness,” she said, receiving cheers from the audience.

She continued, “This myth is wrong. But this myth is too real for too many. It is ancient, so it is trusted. It is a habit, so it’s assumed to be the way things are.” Hathaway went on to say this myth was “dangerous” because it prioritizes a “certain kind” of “love,” “body” and “skin color,” and rejects anything perceived to be “other.”

“And it is a myth that keeps money and power in the hands of the few, instead of being invested in the lives of the free,” she said.

Hathaway ended her remarks by saying she “rejected” the myth and planned to “destroy it.” Watch her full speech below:

Presumably because Hathaway used the word “myth” so many times — and MAGA is looking for yet another reason to hate on Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, in which Hathaway co-stars — a right-leaning X account published the clip of the actor’s 2018 remarks last week, and described it as “a new speech.”

“Celebrities Cheer on the Destruction of Biological Reality,” the lengthy caption of the clip declares.

Kyle Becker, a conservative writer and influencer, shared the same clip over the weekend — and it really took off. “Kids, stay off the Woke propaganda. It will rot your mind worse than any drug,” Becker captioned the clip of Hathaway. In a follow-up tweet, Becker added: “I had to read stacks of this Critical Theory mumbo jumbo in grad school. It’s marxist pablum spoonfed to people who lack critical thinking skills. That’s the ironic part 🤣.”

Elon Musk — who hates Nolan’s take on the fictional story so much that he’s promised to release an AI version of The Odyssey that is “historically accurate” by the end of the year — agreed in the comments.

“She’s just reading the script someone else wrote. No critical thinking is happening here at all,” Musk wrote.

Fox News host Tomi Lahren also shared the clip of Hathaway’s 2018 speech, and accompanied it with a pretty rich caption in which Lahren criticized Hathaway for doing what Lahren essentially does on TV every day.

“A reminder that her standing up there on her perch in her fancy gown and updo delivering this self-righteous lecture cost her absolutely zero,” Lahren wrote. “She makes no sacrifice. She loses nothing. Yet, she is hailed as brave and bold. For what? Words.”
