23 Things That Will Instantly Transport You Back To Your Emo Phase

IYKYK. 🤘

I'm a proud elder emo. I've spent years going to concerts, dyed my hair every color, and I still rock Vans everywhere I go. My playlist is filled with the same angsty anthems from Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, and more iconic '00s staples I still can't get enough of. And while many say being emo is just a phase, I can assure you it never was (and never will be) for me.

Another band I grew up listening to was Green Day, so I was stoked when I heard they're behind a new movie called NIMRODS. The film drops in theaters on August 14 and stars Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Kylr Coffman, and more. The story screams punk-rock energy as an aspiring band gets the opportunity of a lifetime and embarks on a wild cross-country road trip to open for Green Day.

And in case you're feeling a little nostalgic, here are things that'll instantly bring you back to your emo phase (unless you're still in it like me):

1. To start, having an endless collection of band tees for any and every occasion.

2. Waiting in line for hours and hours to see your favorite band because it was always GA pit tickets or nothing.

3. That time we all had side-swept bangs and choppy razor cuts.

4. And who can forget all the smudged dark eyeliner?

5. Spending every summer at the Vans Warped Tour and seeing the iconic set times inflatable as you walked into the venue.

6. That feeling when you got that perfect spot on the barricade.

7. Plaid and checkered prints were staples in your closet.

8. Rocking Vans literally every day of your life.

9. But you definitely had a pair of Converse in rotation.

10. And don't forget the loooong process it took to break in your Doc Martens, too.

11. Trying out every vibrant hair color you could think of.

12. Wearing these throwback rubber bracelets from Jac Vanek.

13. Burning a CD for your best friend with a custom playlist of your favorite emo tracks.

14. Spending your days at the local record store.

15. Accessorizing every outfit with a studded belt.

16. Straightening your hair as a key part of your morning routine.

17. The pure euphoria that only comes with crowdsurfing.

18. Jumping into the mosh pit for an adrenaline rush during every concert and festival.

19. Bringing a leather jacket pretty much everywhere, no matter what the weather was like.

20. Going to Emo Nite and realizing you still know every song by heart.

21. You couldn't resist a pair of ripped jeans — even better if they were skinny.

22. Your wardrobe consisted of black, black, and even more black. In the famous words of Fall Out Boy, "I'll stop wearing black when they make a darker color."

23. Finally, you call yourself an elder emo because you know it was *never* a phase.
