Celebrities are usually more than happy to meet excited fans, but sometimes, those interactions can quickly become uncomfortable — and even feel a bit dehumanizing.
It's something that several stars have discussed publicly before. Chappell Roan, for example, has been outspoken about setting boundaries with fans to protect her mental health, while Justin Bieber previously said he'd stopped taking pictures with fans because "people won't even say 'hi' to me, or recognize me as a human."
Now, Harry Styles has become the latest celebrity to spark that conversation after a recent fan interaction went viral.
In the clip, Harry can be seen talking to a fan when he tries to shake hands. At the very same moment, the fan immediately lifts their phone into selfie position, seemingly ready to take a picture.
Instead of smiling, Harry stops to have a proper introduction. "Hello," he says, extending his hand farther for a handshake. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Harry."
Seeming embarrassed by what happened, the fan lowers their phone and shakes Harry's hand. "It's nice to meet you," they reply, before saying something inaudible in the clip.
After exchanging a few more words, Harry happily leans in so they can take a photo together.
The moment quickly went viral online, with many saying it perfectly captured the sadder parts of celebrity culture.
One Reddit user wrote, "That must feel so fucking weird and dehumanizing, like you're some inanimate object on display. What even is the point of having a record of meeting a celebrity if you didn't even greet them like a human being? May as well take a pic with a poster."
Another added, "Didn't even ask if she could have a photo. Just assumed he'd go along with it. People are so damn entitled."
Others compared the interaction to treating celebrities like "a zoo animal."
"Treating a person like a photo prop is crazy," one commenter wrote, while someone else added, "Like he’s just meat for the camera."
Several people said the moment showed just how much social media has changed fan interactions. "Like what a soulless and dehumanizing interaction," one person said. "People are so desperate to just show that they were next to a famous person that they don't even want to actually meet them. Because the truth is people that do that didn't even really 'meet' them at all. They took a picture near them. I would so much rather have like a 1 minute conversation with a famous person I like then waste that moment taking a photo with them."
Another agreed, writing, "The internet has broken our brains. She cares more about showing other people that she met him than actually meeting him."
Others, however, felt sympathy for the fan, suggesting that she likely got caught up in the excitement of the moment.
"If I was that woman, I would literally wish for the ground to open up and swallow me because I'd be so embarrassed 🫣," one person wrote. "I like to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that she probably didn't mean to cause any offense and just momentarily lost her manners because she was too excited, but also good for Harry for politely calling out this behaviour."
Others also praised Harry for the way he handled it. "Good for him," one person wrote, as another commented, "I love that for him tbh." "Kinda wish more celebrities would do this," one more said.
